The Great Wet Wall

The Great Wall of China
We walked up about 700 of these just to get to the wall!
Not the classic "Great Wall" shot I was hoping for. . .

Saturday we made the trek to The Great Wall of China.  Unfortunately, it was pouring rain and we had a heavy dose of Beijing smog. Our pictures aren't great, but it honestly was still a great day.  We chose not to ride up on the gondola, so we got a workout taking the steep steps all the way up to the wall.

A little history:  The wall was originally started during the Qin dynasty in about 220 BC!  What we think of today as "The Great Wall" was built during the Ming dynasty during the 1400s to keep out the Mongols, although much of it has been renovated since.  For our China savvy viewers, we visited the Mutianyu portion of the wall.

  1. Yeah, that looks pretty wet. Was it slippery? I have never taken the steps up. And it's not too likely to happen in the near future either. Good for you, though. Man. Did you get to do the alpine slide? I'm sad that we won't be at training solely because then we'd get to hang out in Beijing. Oh well, Thailand is fun too. And not nearly as smoggy, I might add.

  2. No, we didn't get to do the alpine slide because it was too wet. :(

I wish you were coming this week, too. You will be missed!

  3. Did you two ride the toboggans down. I remember when I went to the Great Wall a few years ago and I got to ride down. You aren't supposed to go fast, but I couldn't help myself. The employees kept motioning at me to slow down, but I couldn't resist taking a few turns just a little too fast :)

  4. Chip & Mallary, so glad to find your blog (I was rereading your newsletter and saw you had one)...I love blogging and have used blogspot for a couple of years. I will definitely read all of this when I have the time! For now, I will just say Clyde & I are THINKING of you and I am glad you have the knees, hearts, and energy for the trek to the wall! Blessings.
