Chip, i read the book Snow Flower and the Secret Fan this summer and was most struck by its explanation about the practice of foot binding. it amazed me how the mothers' forcing their daughters to break their feet so they could be small (beautiful "golden lilies") was viewed as a fierce mother-love because it allowed them to marry well and be viewed as beautiful and respectable.
