Superstitions?

Below is a list of common knowledge health habits of our students. They wonder why we, as Americans, don't know and follow such rules. And we are curious, too. Is it just superstition and tradition with a placebo effect, or are some of these cultural eating habits actually valid? If you know some of these ideas to be true, please comment.

  1. If you eat too many cherries, you will get a nose bleed.
  2. When you have a stomachache you should eat raw peanuts and porridge.
  3. If you eat too many oranges, you become angry.
  4. Eating cucumbers will improve your skin.
  5. Eating too much spicy food will cause your skin to breakout with pimples.
  6. Do not eat egg and soy milk together or else you might die.
  7. Eating honey and green onions will hurt your eyes.
  8. Eating shrimp while drinking beer will result in paralysis.
  9. Consuming potatoes and bananas together will give you freckles.
  10. After giving birth, women should not shower or leave the bed for one month.
  11. When females are on their period, they should drink brown sugar and water to relieve the discomfort.
  12. Women can eat as many sweets on their period as they want because they cannot gain weight.
  13. Eating papayas will increase breast size.
  14. Women should not eat dates while on their period because eating dates will increase blood flow. They should eat dates after their period to help replenish their blood.
  15. Women should avoid eating or drinking cold items on their period. For example: ice water, ice cream, fruit.

  1. I've heard the one about spicy food, I like the eating sweets on the period...I wonder if it works?

  2. Actually I'm almost positive that eating refined and simple sugars/flours during your period and actually throughout the month can lead to more pain. I have a close friend that had really terrible cramps for years and she basically gave up these things (all the time--not just one week a month!)at the suggestion of a couple of women and now her cramps have been gone for a couple of years. It's really remarkable.

  3. Eating too many cherries gives you the runs, not a nose bleed. Trust me. ;)
